Currently the language used by the translate feature (powered by deepl) is reliant on the client's configured UI language for the target and autodetection for the source.

The problem is that autodetection isn't perfect and one's UI language may not always align with the language they want stuff translated to. Also there are significant quality differences between the UK and US english targets which means some may prefer one over the other.
